List of Adi Shakta Pithas

The Adi Shakta Pithas are an early traditional group of four sacred centres associated with the worship of Shakti, the Divine Mother. “Adi” means original or ancient, while “Shakta Pitha” means a sacred seat of Goddess Shakti. The Kalika Purana describes four principal Pithas: Kamarupa, Jalandhara, Purnagiri and Oddiyana or Uddiyana. Each is traditionally connected with a part of Goddess Sati’s body and a particular form of the Goddess.

These four Pithas are considered important foundations of the wider Shakti Peetha tradition. However, their modern geographical identification is not equally certain. Kamarupa is commonly associated with the Kamakhya Temple in Assam, while Jalandhara is linked with the Jalandhar region. The exact historical locations of Purnagiri and Oddiyana are interpreted differently by scholars and regional traditions.
