Kanchi Shakti Peetha

Sri Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple is the principal centre of Goddess worship in Kanchipuram, one of Tamil Nadu’s most important temple cities. Kamakshi, a form of Parvati and Tripura Sundari, is worshipped in a seated posture in the sanctum. The shrine has a central place in the city’s Shakta tradition and is closely connected with the Kanchi Kamakoti spiritual lineage. Pilgrims commonly visit it alongside Kanchipuram’s major Shaiva and Vaishnava temples.

The database identifies the sacred city with Kanchi Peetha. In the classical tradition followed here, Sati’s skeleton, or kankala, fell at Kanchi; the Goddess is named Devagarbha and the corresponding Bhairava is Ruru. The functioning temple, however, worships the Goddess primarily as Kamakshi. Other later accounts connect Kanchipuram with different body parts or deity names. The description should therefore preserve the Devagarbha–Ruru pairing as a textual Peetha tradition while distinguishing it from the temple’s living Kamakshi identity.

The annual Brahmotsavam is a major celebration, with processions and special worship, while Navratri places the Goddess at the centre of an extended festival cycle. Chariot and float observances are also associated with the temple calendar. As one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peetha identifications, Kamakshi Temple links classical Shakta geography with the continuous ritual life of Kanchipuram.
