Dirgheswari Shakti Peetha

Dirgheswari Temple occupies Sitachal Hill on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra near North Guwahati. The hill preserves old rock-cut sacred images, while the present brick temple belongs to the Ahom period. Historical accounts associate its construction with King Siva Singha and the supervision of the Ahom official Tarun Duwarah Barphukan. An underground inner chamber and carvings around the rocky hill give the shrine a distinctive setting.

Regional tradition reveres Dirgheswari as a Shakti Peetha and associates portions of Sati’s neck and shoulder with Sitachal. The goddess is worshipped as Dirgheswari or Durga. The sources used for this database do not establish a consistent Bhairava name, so none should be supplied without stronger evidence. The body-part claim is a local sacred tradition and should be distinguished from the better-known Kamakhya identification on Nilachal Hill.

Durga Puja is the temple’s largest annual celebration, attracting devotees from Assam and neighbouring areas. The observance has historically included animal offerings alongside special worship of the goddess. Dirgheswari is also valued as a heritage site because of its Ahom-period structure, inscription and earlier rock carvings. Its location overlooking the Brahmaputra connects Shakta devotion, regional history and the sacred geography surrounding Guwahati.
