Haridvara Shakti Peetha

Maya Devi Temple is one of Haridwar’s ancient Siddha Peethas and is dedicated to the city’s presiding Goddess. Located near the traditional centre of Haridwar, the compact shrine forms a recognised pilgrimage group with Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi. Its importance is closely tied to Haridwar’s identity as a gateway to the Himalayas and a major sacred city on the Ganga.

The database records the Peetha as Haridvara. In the tradition followed here, Sati’s abdomen, or jathara, fell at this place. The Goddess is named Bhairavi and the corresponding Bhairava is Vakra, while the functioning temple is commonly known through the living worship of Maya Devi. Differences between the classical deity pairing and the modern temple name should be retained rather than silently merged. The site is widely accepted as the Haridwar identification, although textual lists vary in their naming.

Navratri is the principal season of special Goddess worship. Haridwar also receives exceptional pilgrim numbers during Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh gatherings, when worship across the city’s temple network intensifies. A visit to Maya Devi is often combined with Har Ki Pauri, Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi. The shrine’s ancient standing, central location and continuing ritual importance make it a key stop in Haridwar’s pilgrimage circuit and an important expression of Shakti worship in Uttarakhand.
