Shri Maa Purnagiri Temple, Tanakpur
Tanakpur, Danda Range, Uttarakhand 262523
Purnagiri Temple is a major hilltop Shakti shrine above the Kali River near Tanakpur. The pilgrimage involves a road journey followed by a steep approach, and it is especially crowded during the spring fair.
Shri Maa Purnagiri Temple is a major hill pilgrimage above the Kali River near Tanakpur in Champawat District, Uttarakhand. The shrine is dedicated to Purnagiri Devi, also called Purna Devi, and is reached through a mountain approach that becomes exceptionally busy during the spring pilgrimage season. Its position near the Nepal border gives the pilgrimage a cross-border regional character. Uttarakhand Tourism includes Purnagiri among the major temples on the state’s Shakti Trail.
The Peetha is recorded as Purnagiri, with Purna as an alternate name. Regional tradition associates the shrine with Sati’s navel. The Goddess is Purnagiri Devi and the corresponding Bhairava is Hemanta. This body-part and Bhairava pairing is prominent in later and regional Shakti Peetha accounts but is not expressed identically in every classical enumeration. The attribution should therefore remain qualified while the temple’s established status as a major living Shakti shrine is clearly recognised.
The Purnagiri Mela during Chaitra Navratri is the temple’s largest annual pilgrimage and continues for an extended period. Devotees travel through Tanakpur and complete the steep final approach to the shrine, so weather, crowd controls and current route conditions should be checked before visiting. The combination of its mountain setting, major seasonal fair and enduring regional devotion makes Purnagiri one of Uttarakhand’s most important Goddess destinations and a central stop on the state’s Shakti pilgrimage circuit.
Purnagiri tradition associates Sati's navel with the hill shrine and names Purnagiri Devi with Bhairava Hemanta. This account is prominent in Uttarakhand's regional Shakti tradition and later Peetha lists, though it is not expressed identically in every classical enumeration. Qualification is appropriate.
