Chamunda Shakti Peetha

Chamunda Devi Temple, also known as Shri Chamunda Nandikeshwar Dham, stands beside the Baner River near Dharamshala and Palampur in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Chamunda, the fierce form of the goddess who destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda. District tradition explains that the older shrine was at the remote hilltop now called Aadi Himani Chamunda. Several centuries ago, after divine guidance received in a dream, the sacred image was installed at the more accessible present location. A kund and the surrounding river landscape add to the temple’s ritual setting.

Chamunda is worshipped here together with Nandikeshwar, the associated form of Shiva. The temple is a major Shakti centre and one of the principal stops in Himachal’s Devi circuit.
