Dantakali Shakti Peetha

Dantakali Temple stands in the historic Bijayapur area above Dharan in Koshi Province, Nepal. The shrine is dedicated to Dantakali, a form of the Divine Mother whose name refers to a tooth. It forms part of a group of important sacred sites around Dharan and Bijayapur, including Pindeshwar, Budha Subba and Panchakanya. The temple is strongly rooted in eastern Nepal’s regional religious life and attracts both local worshippers and pilgrims from across the border.

According to the received Dantakali tradition, a tooth or teeth of Sati fell at this place while Shiva carried her body. The goddess is worshipped as Dantakali or Satidevi. A dependable Bhairava name has not been verified for this entry. The site is best described as a regional Upa Shaktipeeth because the body-part attribution and its position in the Peetha system are not uniform across the principal classical lists. This qualification preserves the local belief without overstating textual agreement.

Dashain, Nepal’s major autumn festival centred on the victory of the goddess, is the temple’s most important celebration. The Navratri days within Dashain bring special rituals, offerings and increased attendance. Worship also continues on other auspicious days throughout the year. Dantakali Temple is significant for its distinct tooth tradition, its connection with the sacred landscape of Bijayapur and its continuing role as a prominent Shakta shrine of eastern Nepal.
