Karavira Shakti Peetha

Shri Kali Devi Temple in Patiala is a prominent North Indian shrine dedicated to Goddess Kali. The temple complex was established under the patronage of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, who is traditionally credited with bringing a large image of Kali from Bengal. A shrine of Raj Rajeshwari also stands within the complex. The site attracts Hindu and Sikh devotees from Patiala and beyond, reflecting the broad regional reverence accorded to the Goddess.

This database associates the temple with the Karavira Peetha tradition, in which Sati’s three eyes, or trinetra, are said to have fallen. The Goddess is recorded as Mahishamardini and the Bhairava as Krodhisha. This identification should be presented carefully: Karavira or Sarkarara is mapped differently in several Shakti Peetha lists, and the Patiala shrine is not the same location as the better-known Karavira identification at Kolhapur. The entry therefore preserves the tradition represented by this list without treating all geographical claims as unanimous.

Navratri is among the busiest periods, with extended worship and large numbers of devotees. Kali Puja is another important occasion centred on the fierce and protective form of the Goddess. The temple’s royal-era foundation, active ritual life and continuing popularity make it a major Shakta destination in Punjab, while its Peetha attribution remains one strand within a wider, varied textual tradition.
