Kaumari Shakti Peetha

Mahamaya Devi Temple stands at Ratanpur in Bilaspur district, Chhattisgarh, the former capital of the Kalachuri rulers of Ratnapura. Dedicated to Maa Mahamaya, the temple is associated with Durga and Mahalakshmi and is regarded as the presiding shrine of historic Ratanpur. Government tourism information dates its main architectural development to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with later rebuilding under local rulers. The north-facing Nagara-style temple stands near a large tank and is supported by sixteen stone pillars. Its complex also preserves subsidiary shrines and remains connected with Ratanpur’s wider landscape of forts, ponds and temples.

The temple is counted in a widely followed regional tradition among the fifty-two Shakti Peethas. In the classification used by this database, the Peetha is named Kaumari and Sati’s right shoulder is believed to have fallen here. The presiding goddess is recorded as Maa Mahamaya. These details belong to the received Ratanpur tradition and should be distinguished from Peetha lists that use different names or locations. Kalbhairava is honoured as guardian of the pilgrimage complex.

Both Chaitra and Sharadiya Navaratri are major celebrations. Thousands of Jyoti Kalash lamps are maintained through the nine nights as offerings made on behalf of devotees. The dual sacred image, associated with Mahishasuramardini and Saraswati, adds to the temple’s distinctive ritual identity. Mahamaya Devi Temple remains one of Chhattisgarh’s most prominent centres of Shakta pilgrimage.
