Pavagadh Shakti Peetha

Kalika Mata Temple stands at the summit of Pavagadh Hill in Panchmahal District, Gujarat, within the Champaner–Pavagadh Archaeological Park. Gujarat Tourism describes it as one of the state’s oldest temples, with pilgrimage continuing long before and after Champaner’s period as a major city. Devotees reach the hilltop through steps and ropeway, and the shrine remains one of Gujarat’s most visited Goddess destinations.

The Peetha is recorded as Pavagadh. Regional tradition associates the site with Sati’s right toe or specifically the right great toe. The Goddess is Mahakali and the corresponding Bhairava is Lakulisha. Because sources differ over whether the fallen element was any toe or the great toe, both forms should remain visible rather than being silently standardised. Kalika Mata Temple is the accepted modern identification.

Chaitra Navratri and Sharad Navratri bring major fairs, extended darshan arrangements and very large pilgrim crowds. The temple can be combined with the forts, mosques, stepwells and archaeological remains of Champaner, creating an unusual journey linking active Shakti worship with a UNESCO-recognised heritage landscape. Its summit setting and long continuity of pilgrimage distinguish Pavagadh from many urban Peethas. The shrine’s importance is established both through living regional devotion and its central position within the Champaner–Pavagadh cultural landscape.
