Sharada Shakti Peetha

Sharada Peeth is a ruined Hindu temple and historic centre of learning in the Neelum Valley, dedicated to Goddess Sharada, a form of Saraswati. Archaeological and historical accounts connect the site with Kashmir’s intellectual traditions, the Sharada script and journeys by scholars seeking sacred learning. The surviving stone complex is a heritage ruin rather than a functioning temple with routine public pilgrimage.

The Peetha is recorded as Sharada, with Sharda Peeth, Saraswati Peeth and Kashmir Sharada Peeth as alternate names. According to the tradition used here, Sati’s right hand, or dakshina-hasta, fell at the site. The Goddess is Sharada and the corresponding Bhairava is Tribhuvaneshwara, with Tribhuvaneshwar, Tridambaka and Tridambakeshwar appearing as variants. The right-hand association is widely repeated, although textual naming differs.

Navratri is traditionally linked with Sharada worship, but current access, observance and travel possibilities depend on local regulations and political conditions in the divided Kashmir region. Visitors should not assume ordinary cross-border pilgrimage access. Sharada Peeth’s importance extends beyond its Peetha classification: it represents a major memory of Kashmir’s religious, linguistic and educational history. The entry should therefore balance sacred tradition with the site’s present archaeological condition and restricted accessibility, avoiding claims that describe the ruins as an active modern temple complex.
