Vaidyanatha Shakti Peetha

The Baba Baidyanath temple complex at Deoghar, Jharkhand, is one of India’s most important Shaiva pilgrimage centres and is traditionally counted among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The complex contains the principal shrine of Shiva as Baidyanath together with temples dedicated to Parvati and other deities. The Shiva and Parvati shrines are ritually connected, expressing the inseparable presence of Shiva and Shakti. Deoghar is therefore revered both as Baidyanath Dham and as a Shakti Peetha.

According to the Vaidyanatha Peetha tradition recorded in this database, Sati’s heart, or hridaya, fell at Deoghar. The goddess is named Jayadurga and is represented through the Parvati shrine in the temple complex. Bhairava is Vaidyanatha, the same divine name by which the Jyotirlinga is worshipped. Some textual traditions have debated the precise location of Vaidyanatha, but the Deoghar identification is firmly established in contemporary pilgrimage practice.

The month-long Shravani Mela is the largest annual observance. Kanwariyas collect Ganga water at Sultanganj and carry it on foot for more than one hundred kilometres to offer jalabhishek at Baidyanath. Maha Shivaratri is another major Shaiva festival, while Navratri honours the Shakti aspect. The complex’s combined Jyotirlinga and Peetha status makes it a distinctive meeting point of Shaiva and Shakta worship.
