Vakreshvara Shakti Peetha

Bakreswar is a combined Shaiva and Shakta pilgrimage centre in Birbhum District, West Bengal. The sacred area is known for Bakranath or Vakranatha Shiva, the Mahishamardini Goddess shrine and naturally heated springs. These elements create a pilgrimage landscape in which temple worship, ritual bathing and local sacred geography are closely connected.

The Peetha is recorded as Vakreshvara. Its associated fallen element is Sati’s manas, meaning the mind or inner faculty rather than a physical organ. The Goddess is Mahishamardini and the corresponding Bhairava is Vakranatha. The word manas should remain visible and be explained rather than converted into an anatomical body part. Bakreswar is the accepted Bengal identification, although broader Peetha lists may vary in spelling and classification.

Maha Shivaratri is especially important across the wider Bakreswar temple complex because of the prominence of Shiva, while Navratri centres attention on the Goddess. Pilgrims also visit the hot springs, which are an established feature of the site’s religious and travel identity. Birbhum district includes Bakreswar among its recognised tourism destinations. The location’s importance comes from the coexistence of Shaiva and Shakta worship and from its place within Birbhum’s unusually dense network of Goddess temples. This makes Bakreswar both a classical Peetha identification and a living multi-shrine pilgrimage centre.
