Yogmaya Temple is situated in Mehrauli, South Delhi, close to the Qutb complex and the historic fortifications of Lal Kot. Dedicated to Yogmaya, the divine power associated in Vaishnava tradition with Krishna’s sister and with Vindhyavasini, it is one of Mehrauli’s oldest continuously revered Hindu sacred sites. Traditions claim great antiquity for the shrine, but the present structure largely reflects repeated reconstruction and an early nineteenth-century restoration. Its significance therefore lies in the continuity of worship at the site rather than in treating every part of the current building as ancient.

Some later and regional Shakti Peetha traditions identify Yogmaya as a Peetha where Sati’s head fell. The goddess is named Yogmaya, with Mahamaya and Vindhyavasini appearing as related forms. No reliably established Bhairava name is recorded here. This head-fall attribution is not uniform across the principal classical Shakti Peetha lists, so it should be presented as a local or later identification alongside the temple’s independent and well-established Yogmaya tradition.

Navaratri brings large congregations for goddess worship. The temple is also integral to Phool Walon Ki Sair, the historic Mehrauli festival in which floral offerings are made both at Yogmaya Temple and at the nearby dargah of Khwaja Bakhtiar Kaki. This association makes the shrine important not only for pilgrimage but also for Delhi’s shared cultural heritage.

Note on the body part

Some later and local traditions associate Yogmaya Temple with Sati's head, but this identification is not uniform across the principal classical Shakti Peetha lists. The temple has an independent and ancient Yogmaya tradition in Mehrauli. Retain the head attribution with this qualification and avoid presenting it...
