Aranya Shakti Peetha

Aranya Devi Temple in Arrah, Bihar, is dedicated to Maa Aranya Devi, the presiding goddess traditionally associated with the city and its older forest landscape. The name “Aranya” means forest, and local tradition connects the goddess with Aranyani, the ancient divine presence of woodland and wilderness. Historical surveys of the region recorded the shrine in the early nineteenth century, while the present temple reflects later rebuilding and continued community patronage rather than a single surviving ancient structure.

In the tradition followed by this database, Aranya or Arrah is identified as a regional Shakti Peetha where Sati’s right thigh is believed to have fallen. The goddess is worshipped as Aranya Devi or Aranyani, with Bhuma Bhairava named as the associated Bhairava. This identification is important in local devotional practice, although it is not consistently included in every major classical list of Shakti Peethas; it should therefore be understood as a regional Peetha tradition.

The temple remains an important centre of worship for residents of Arrah and pilgrims visiting Bhojpur district. Navaratri and Durga Puja are the principal festive periods, when special worship, devotional gatherings and increased pilgrimage take place. Its significance combines Shakta belief, the cultural identity of Arrah and the enduring idea of the goddess as guardian of the surrounding region.
