Mangala Gauri Shakti Peetha

Mangala Gauri Temple is situated on Mangala Gauri Hill in Gaya, Bihar, and is one of the city’s most important goddess shrines. The present temple is generally dated to the fifteenth century, while the sanctity of Mangala Gauri is associated with older Puranic traditions. The shrine is counted among the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas in a widely followed South Asian tradition. Its hilltop setting places it within Gaya’s broader sacred landscape, which draws both Shakta pilgrims and visitors performing other rites in the ancient pilgrimage city.

Tradition holds that a breast of Sati fell at this place. The sacred body part is interpreted as a symbol of nourishment, maternal care and divine benevolence. The goddess is worshipped as Mangala Gauri or Sarvamangala, and the associated Bhairava is named Sarvananda. The sanctum emphasizes the goddess’s maternal power rather than a conventional full anthropomorphic image, reinforcing the Peetha’s connection with fertility, sustenance and auspiciousness.

Navaratri and Durga Puja bring large numbers of devotees to the temple. Another distinctive observance is Mangala Gauri Vrat, kept especially by women on Tuesdays during the month of Shravan for marital well-being and family prosperity. The temple’s combination of recognized Shakti Peetha status, medieval architectural continuity and active ritual life makes it a major pilgrimage destination in Bihar.
