Chandika Sthan Shakti Peetha

Maa Chandika Sthan is a riverside Goddess shrine in Munger, Bihar, located near the northeastern side of the city. The Munger district administration recognises it as one of the fifty-one Shakti Peethas and an important pilgrimage centre of the historic Anga region. The temple is dedicated to Chandi and is also widely described as a Siddhi Peetha, a sacred place associated with the fulfilment of spiritual aims.

Regional tradition holds that Sati’s left eye fell at Chandika Sthan. The goddess is worshipped as Chandika or Chandi Devi. The sources used in this database do not establish a consistent Bhairava name, so none should be supplied through inference. Classical and later Peetha lists may vary in their names, body-part assignments and divine pairings; the Munger attribution should therefore be presented as a prominent sacred tradition rather than an archaeological claim.

Local belief connects worship at Chandika Sthan with relief from eye ailments, reflecting the shrine’s left-eye association. Another well-known legend links the site with Karna, the heroic king of Anga, who is said to have worshipped the goddess and distributed gold to the needy. Navaratri is the temple’s principal festival period, marked by special puja, offerings and heavy attendance. Chandika Sthan remains a major expression of Shakti devotion in eastern Bihar.
