Gadkalika Shakti Peetha

Gadkalika Temple is an ancient goddess shrine on the outskirts of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, dedicated to Kali in the form of Gadkalika. The temple is traditionally associated with the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, who is believed to have worshipped the goddess and received the gift of learning and poetic brilliance. Ujjain district authorities describe Gadkalika as a Siddhapeeth and record images of Kali, Vishnu and Hanuman within the temple. The structure has been repaired and rebuilt at different periods, so its continuing worship is more securely documented than any single claimed construction date.

Regional Ujjain tradition also identifies Gadkalika as a Shakti Peetha where Sati’s upper lip fell. The goddess is worshipped as Gadkalika, but a dependable associated Bhairava name has not been verified in the database. This attribution is not uniform across the principal classical Peetha lists, and Ujjain contains other temples connected with separate body-part traditions. The upper-lip claim should therefore remain clearly qualified as regional.

Both Chaitra and Sharad Navratri bring special rituals and thousands of devotees. Students, writers and artists also visit seeking the goddess’s blessing for knowledge and creativity because of the Kalidasa tradition. Gadkalika is commonly included with Mahakaleshwar, Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and other sites in an Ujjain pilgrimage. Its importance rests on Siddhapeeth status, literary association and active Kali worship.
