Narmada Shakti Peetha

Shree Maa Narmada Temple at Gwarighat is a riverside shrine in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, dedicated to the Narmada as a living goddess. Gwarighat is one of the city’s principal ceremonial ghats, where devotees bathe, perform ancestral rites, offer lamps and attend the evening Narmada aarti. The temple belongs to Jabalpur’s broader Narmada pilgrimage landscape and is easily visited with other ghats and sacred places along the river.

The Narmada or Shona Peetha tradition associates Sati’s hip, or nitamba, with a sacred location in the Narmada region. The goddess is named Shona and Bhairava is Bhadrasena. However, identifying this classical Peetha specifically with the modern Maa Narmada Temple at Gwarighat is uncertain. Many accounts place the Narmada or Shona Peetha around Amarkantak or another site connected with the river’s upper course. Gwarighat should therefore be presented as a modern Narmada shrine linked to the tradition, not as a securely established classical location.

Narmada Jayanti is the temple area’s principal annual celebration, marked by worship, lamps, processions and activity along the riverfront. Daily evening aarti is central to the visitor experience, while Kartik also brings religious gatherings. The shrine’s verified significance lies in active Narmada devotion at Jabalpur; its Shakti Peetha identification must remain explicitly qualified.
