Maihar Shakti Peetha

Maa Sharda Temple stands on Trikuta Hill at Maihar in Madhya Pradesh and is one of the state’s best-known goddess shrines. The deity is worshipped as Sharda, the goddess of learning, music and wisdom. Pilgrims traditionally climb 1,063 steps to reach the hilltop, while a ropeway provides an alternative route when operating. Local tradition strongly associates the shrine with the legendary warrior Alha, who is believed to remain an eternal devotee of the goddess. Maihar’s wider cultural identity also reflects its renowned tradition of classical music.

Regional Shakti Peetha accounts identify Maihar as the place where Sati’s necklace, or haar, fell. The goddess is worshipped as Sharda Devi and Kala Bhairava is named as the associated Bhairava. This necklace tradition is prominent in later and regional Peetha lists but is not stated consistently in the principal classical enumerations. It should therefore be preserved as the received Maihar tradition without presenting it as universal textual agreement.

Chaitra and Sharad Navratri are the largest pilgrimage periods, bringing special worship, extended arrangements and very large crowds. Devotees visit throughout the year for blessings connected with knowledge, family welfare and personal vows. The temple’s importance lies in its dramatic hilltop pilgrimage, living Sharda worship, Alha legend and enduring place in the religious and cultural life of Madhya Pradesh.
