Tarapith Temple
Near, VIP Road, Tarapith, City, Rampurhat, West Bengal 731233
Tarapith is one of Bengal's foremost tantric pilgrimage centres, dedicated to Goddess Tara. The temple, cremation ground and legacy of the saint Bamakhepa together shape its distinctive religious identity.

Tarapith Temple near Rampurhat is one of Bengal’s foremost tantric pilgrimage centres. The shrine is dedicated to Tara, a major form of the Divine Mother and one of the ten Mahavidyas. The temple, nearby cremation ground and the remembered practices of the saint Bamakhepa together create a distinctive sacred landscape that draws devotees, household pilgrims and tantric practitioners.
The Peetha is recorded as Tara. In the tradition followed by this database, the fallen element is a portion or star of Sati’s eye, expressed as netransha-tara. The Goddess is named Tarini and the corresponding Bhairava is Unmatta. Tarapith’s status and its precise body-part wording vary across classical Peetha lists, so the eye association should remain source-qualified. Its independent importance as a major Tara shrine and tantric centre is not dependent on universal agreement about classification.
Kaushiki Amavasya is the shrine’s most distinctive tantric gathering and attracts very large crowds. Kali Puja and Navratri are also major worship periods. West Bengal Tourism and Birbhum district both recognise Tarapith as a leading religious destination. Pilgrims frequently combine it with Nalateswari, Nandikeshwari, Bakreswar, Fullara and Kankalitala. Tarapith’s enduring significance comes from active Tara worship, tantric ritual culture and the legacy of Bamakhepa, making it one of eastern India’s most recognisable Shakta centres.
Tara tradition at Tarapith associates the shrine with a portion of Sati's eye or the star of the eye, expressed as netransha-tara. Tarini is named as the goddess with Bhairava Unmatta. Tarapith is a major tantric centre, but its status and body-part wording vary across classical Peetha lists. Sources vary.
1. For the dteails of Peetha, Body parts, Devi, Bhairava we primarily used the book The Shakta Pithas by Dr. Dines Chandra Sircar (D. C. Sircar), and secondaryly used the book 108 Divya Shaktipeethas by Banwari Lal Kanchhal. 2. This Shaktipeeth is mentioned in the list of the Pithas (Mahapithas) in the Shivacharita. 3. Banwari Lal Kanchhal, in his book 108 Divya Shaktipeethas, identifies this temple/place as a Samshaktipeeth. However, D. C. Sircar, in The Shakta Pithas, lists it as a Shakti Peetha, referring to the list of Pithas (Mahapithas) mentioned in the Shivacharita.
