Vrindavana Shakti Peetha

Shree Shree Uma Peeth at Paanighat is a local Shakta shrine within Vrindavan, one of the principal pilgrimage towns of the Braj region. The temple is dedicated to Uma, a form of the Divine Mother, and is identified by its followers with the Vrindavana Shakti Peetha tradition. Its location allows devotees to include the shrine within the wider Mathura–Vrindavan circuit, although public official documentation about the temple’s foundation, management and architectural history is limited.

The Peetha is recorded as Vrindavana, with Umavana and Keshajala preserved as alternate names. According to the tradition represented in this database, Sati’s hair, or kesha, fell in the region. The Goddess is Uma, with Katyayani appearing as an alternate identification, and the Bhairava is Bhutesha, also called Krishnanatha in some accounts. Several temples in Mathura and Vrindavan claim this same Peetha association. Uma Peeth should therefore be presented as one modern living claimant rather than the conclusively established classical location.

Navratri is the principal season for special Goddess worship at the shrine. Vrindavan’s wider pilgrimage activity becomes particularly intense around Holi, even though that festival is chiefly associated with Radha and Krishna traditions. Uma Peeth adds a distinct Shakta layer to Braj’s predominantly Vaishnava sacred landscape.
